Carl Craig
Desire: The Carl Craig Story
One of the most important figures in Detroit techno, Craig takes a look back at his storied career with a best of compilation that supports a new, much celebrated documentary. Part of what was described as the 'second wave' of Detroit techno, which encompassed roughly 1988-1992, Carl Craig helped lead the way taking the rhythms and incorporating more themes to the sound helping them come alive to the imaginations of listeners. This soundtrack is helps highlight why Carl's music is so fondly looked upon. Spanning decades of his groundbreaking career, this 2x12" vinyl release brings together some of his most iconic and elusive works that show his vision within the genre of techno was much wider than just a dancefloor. Opening with 'No More Words', a foundational 1991 track, the compilation immediately roots itself in Detroit's rich sonic soil. The seamless fusion of melody and machine that defines Craig's sound is evident throughout. From the lush emotional depths of 'At Les' to the jazzy, broken-beat innovation of Innerzone Orchestra's 'Bug In The Bassbin'. Equally essential are the remixes like Junior Boys' 'Like A Child' and his sublime, long-overlooked remix of Slam's 'Azure'. Under aliases like Psyche/BFC and 69, tracks like 'Galaxy' and 'Desire' reveal the futurism that shaped the early techno movement. The inclusion of rarities like 'The Truth' (as Designer Music) and the ambient 'Meditation 4' are great additions than help show Craig is much more than just a techno producer. With stunning remasters and thoughtful sequencing, Desire honours Craig's legacy while introducing a new generation to his timeless sound.
